References in resume

Always, always ask the person if he/she can be your reference in your resume rather than assume HR wouldn’t call that person to check up on you!

References contact are different from Supervisor/Manager in your previous jobs. These are people who should be giving positive feedback about yourself and know about your previous/current job experiences and function. They can be your colleagues (same level), sub-ordinates or higher level managers than yourself.

If the person you put as Reference is not in a good relationship with you then it’s better not to put it for you may never know this person could break your new job hope.

Don’t put parents or relatives (unless they are working with you) either. It would show you’re daddy/mommy/insert your relative’s baby. The last thing you want to tell is you cannot be independent.

Keep … to yourself

In formal documents or even internal emails, we should keep “…” to ourselves only (and informal communication).

You may think that putting “…” makes you appear intelligent for you want others to think or you want to project to people that you are thinking. What others would be thinking if you use it more than once in a document would be, “Can this fella decide decisively? Or must this fella ponder for a long time and only will get back with us? What’s the hidden word in …?”

Using “…” shows that you would want the other party’s approval if there’s dispute or enquiry. To continue or to be continued, we use this too.

Should anyone use … in a formal document, be wary that he/she is mixing pleasure with work but is probably someone who’s flexible.
